The XTAR AA battery is a unique replacement for AA-size batteries with a nominal voltage of 1.5V. Internally, the battery uses a Li-Ion cell (3.6V), combined with an electronic stabilizer and voltage reducer, which provides a constant voltage of 1.5V under load until the cell is fully discharged.

In terms of capacity, the XTAR AA/1800 mAh is comparable to Eneloop cells, but since it uses Li-Ion technology, it can deliver several times more current than them and does not heat up under high load. This makes it particularly suitable for use with consumers such as digital cameras and flashes, LED flashlights, etc.

The disadvantages of this type of product are twofold: (1) a special charger from the same manufacturer is required to charge it, and (2) the indication of the remaining charge on the powered devices may not be accurate.

The Li-Ion technology used provides an estimated life of over 1,000 charge/discharge cycles. Compared to NiMH batteries, this 1.5V Li-Ion cell is over 30% lighter (19 g instead of the typical 30 g for Eneloop).
